Opinion: Protecting affordable housing for people with disabilities

For decades, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were often placed in large institutions, separated from their communities and opportunities for independent living. Today, community-based housing and support services provide a far better alternative, allowing individuals to live in neighborhoods they love while maintaining their independence and dignity.

In a recent opinion piece published by The Daily Memphian, Intunity CEO Steve Doughty highlights the importance of protecting community living options for people with disabilities. He reflects on Tennessee’s transition away from institutional care following the closure of the Arlington Developmental Center and explains how organizations like Intunity help individuals live safely and successfully in their own homes through affordable housing and supported living services.

The article also raises concerns about recent federal actions that could weaken long-standing protections supporting community integration and access to Medicaid-funded services. While legal rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act remain in place, changes to federal enforcement and regulations could make it easier for states to reduce support for community-based services, potentially placing vulnerable individuals at risk of institutionalization.

At Intunity, we see every day how access to safe, affordable housing transforms lives. Community living empowers people with disabilities to build relationships, participate in their neighborhoods, and enjoy the same sense of belonging that all people deserve.
